Mrs. Doolittle
You’ve seen that movie with Eddie murphy? Dr. Doolittle? The vet that literally talks to animals and animals follow him? Well, lately I feel like that. I seem to attract these furry fellas. Like I don’t have enough going in my life: I have 2 children, 2 cats, 2 dogs and a grown adult man to deal with. Well, I guess sometimes fate steps in and you can do nothing about it.
It all started out as a regular Friday. I went to work and got sent home. Darn….So with it still being fairly early in the day, I decided to take the dogs on a walk. I live on an old hwy that parrall’s with the Columbia River. It was a foggy morning but crisp and beautiful on the water. The bad part about where we live is that it’s also close to a very old cemetery. The cemetery is not scary persay, but it doesn’t get a lot of traffic thru it on a daily basis and it attracts homeless people. I have never let my dogs wander in it but Friday, after our walk to the river, they were literally begging to go in. I reluctantly let them go off leash and wander around. Within seconds of stepping into the cemetery, they started barking and whining. If you know my dogs, they are not barkers or whiners. They had found something. In the past, I have found trash near by and bags of dog poop so I just assumed they had found some dog poop. I run over there to get them away from it and I come across this bag. It’s a New Season’s paper bag. New Season's, really? As I get closer, I find that it’s wet and the bag is literally stapled shut. The dogs are going wild, whining and scratching at it. I also discover that the bag is whining back at us. I immediately open the bag. I discover a puppy, covered in it’s own poop, shaking and dripping wet. I pick it up and race home. I get home and discover that it’s a Yorkshire Terrier and as the poop is being washed away, it shows that his fur has been spray painted green. Who could do such a thing? First of all, stuff a small puppy in a bag and staple it shut and spray paint it prior to that??? I was outraged.
I immediately fell in love. My dogs fell in love. I called my vet and to my surprise, they stated that this kind of thing was becoming a normal thing. A NORMAL THING??? The receptionist proceeds to tell me that they have had multiple calls throughout the summer of people finding puppies, kitties and cats in bags or boxes, dumped in vacant lots. I was mortified to hear that news. What is going on with our world? We don’t live in a third world country. Why not drop it off at a shelter? Sell it on craigslist? Give it to someone, anyone…but dump it?!!!
Well, to make a long story short, we now are the proud owners of not only 2 pitbulls, 2 orange tabbies but now a Yorkshire Terrier.… I want to introduce you to Norman. He loves my Pitties and loves my kitties. He adores my kids. He is potty trained, knows how to walk on a leash and has stolen our hearts. You can now call me Mrs. Doolittle.
